Forum Topic: Primary review

Standards in reading are back in the news headlines again today, with questions being raised about the effectiveness of the Literacy Strategy. But what do you think? Has it all been a waste of time? Do you agree with the report’s criticisms? Progress in reading is the area highlighted most in the press today, but what about all the other aspects of literacy, besides reading, which are essential parts of the Literacy Strategy – speaking and listening, writing and awareness of genre? Are schools seeing progress in these areas? Why not share your views?

I think the literacy strategy has been a great thing for primary schools. Ok so it was a little too prescriptive at first, but it has really helped break down the subject for both teachers and children. I enjoyed working with the original framework as it helped me identify clear objectives for my teaching – and I feel the recent revision is excellent. Now we are confident with what we are teaching we have more freedom to teach it creatively. So I shall not be taking much notice of this latest round of news stories – we know we are striving to do a good job and give the children the best education we can. And we know where we need to improve in our individual schools and what’s worked and what hasn’t. That’s what really counts!

Picked up a tip at the BETT show this year. Don’t just rely on your printed copy of the new Framework documents or the original CD version – the website changes frequently and there are some great new resources and ideas being put on there all the time. The ICT and literacy planning guidance is particularly useful. I am really enjoying working with the new framework now – and it’s great how Literacy Time supports it so well.
