If you haven’t seen our Authors and Letters resource in the March 2008 issue of ‘Literacy Time PLUS’ Ages 7 to 9, then take a look. This fantastic on-screen resource contains masses of resources to support the Y3 Narrative unit 4 in the Literacy Framework – with stories and poems by popular children’s author, Moira Andrew. The resource also includes examples of letters and emails which provide great models for the children’s own writing. Moira would welcome any feedback and is willing to answer questions from teachers or children right here in the Online Forum. A great oportunity for direct online contact with an author!

Hi Moira – I have really enjoyed looking through your Authors and Letters resource and hope to use this with my class later this term. Can I ask which you enjoy writing most – stories or poems – and why? And if you had to give my class one ‘tip’ for writing a good poem, what would it be?

Hello Grangettes – I’m delighted that you are enjoying my Authors & Letters article. Although I like writing stories, my first love is poetry. If I want to remember something that’s happened to me or to describe a scene, my writing always turns into a poem. In fact, I like to tell people that all my photographs are poems!
A good tip for beginning a poem is to make notes, rather like writing out a shopping list. That helps to focus your ideas – then you can work on the important bits. It’s also helpful to find a pattern, eg. ‘My Gran’ and fit your ideas round it.
I’d love to read the poems that the children come up with – just email them to me on info@moiraandrew.com
Good luck!
Moira Andrew

Authors and Letters is a fantastic resource. It’s packed with so much material. It’s like having a whole Literacy Time in one go! I am really looking forward to sharing some of these stories with my pupils – and will encourage them to write to you, Moira, when we have finished our work. Many of my pupils have seen your stories before – you have written some of the books in our current reading scheme. Some of the books in the scheme are a bit old now, and we’ve weeded out the very old-fashioned ones, but your books are still in there!
