Our school is being inspected during School Grounds Week. I need to plan for Years 5 and 6 maths lessons (three of them) to use the outdoors. Any ideas?????

Why don’t you put cones on the field to make a grid and do a lesson on co ordinates. You could have three grids one for each ability group. Less able could try and throw a ball into a particular cell by picking a co ordinate reference card e.g (5,9). Higher ability children could stand in the grid at certain points holding rope to make a shape, then you could get them to translate the shape by getting them to move to wherever. Would require some thinking – but just a thought!

Hi Neil in Manchester and lollydan, we’ve just started a new series in Junior Ed called ‘maths outdoors’. It starts in the July issue and covers subjects such as angles and symmetry. All the articles will be available on the website each month for you to share with colleagues or save to your folder. Let us know what you think!
