Health and wellbeing are never far from news headlines – Ed Balls recently announced the next phase of the National Healthy Schools Programme – and there is increasing pressure on schools to address more aspects of these areas. That said, many schools already undertake a great deal of excellent work in order to achieve the national standards for Healthy School Status (see our other article ‘Healthy eating on the menu’ that details a healthy eating programme in Derby).

The ‘Be healthy’ strand of the Every Child Matters (ECM) agenda is very important, as are some of the other strands, such as ‘Make a positive contribution’ and ‘Enjoy and achieve’. There are always new ideas that can be adopted and adapted to make these strands stimulating, creative, fun, and that involve the whole-school community.
