Top children’s authors say scrap SATs

Over the weekend, some of Britain’s best-loved children’s authors have pledged their support for a campaign aimed at scrapping SATs for more than a million school children. As reported in The Independent (11/05/08), Philip Pullman, Jacqueline Wilson and children’s laureate, Michael Rosen, have joined leaders of the National Association of Head Teachers to demand that the national tests be abandoned. Despite defence by children’s minister, Beverley Hughes, national curriculum tests continue to be heavily criticised by teachers and other educationalists who claim they distort good teaching practice and inflict unnecessary pressure on children.
