About the March 2008 issue

Welcome to Literacy Time PLUS Ages 9 to 11, finalist in this year’s Educational Resource Awards.

The March issue of Literacy Time PLUS Ages 9 to 11 offers literacy resources on a Family theme and a host of materials for reluctant readers.

We begin with a multimedia resource with great boy appeal, exploring the novel and movie Stormbreaker by the best-selling author Anthony Horowitz. Children can compare the film and written version of the same scene from this action-packed adventure novel, watch a clip of the movie being made and listen to soundbites from the stars and from Anthony Horowitz himself. Then they can download our Author Profile to find out more about this popular author.

Our second on-screen resource this month is the first in a two-part set of interactive poetry writing frames by Kevin McCann. In Part 1 we provide two electronic Conversation Poetry frames. And if you are looking for a model of a good conversation poem, look no further than our downloadable poster, presenting Michael Rosen’s ‘Mum’ll Be Coming Home Today’.

For stories on a Family theme you can’t beat Helen Cresswell’s series The Bagthorpes, and an extract from her novel Ordinary Jack is provided as a group reading leaflet. The extract is particularly useful for the study of dialogue, and for some tips on using and presenting dialogue in their own writing, the children can refer to our downloadable wallchart How to write dialogue.

Finally our second printed group reading text this month provides a selection of diaries, letters and journals, real and fictional, written to or about various family members. Find out how Queen Victoria felt on her wedding day, and enjoy Roald Dahl’s memories of cycling to kindergarten with his sister.

You can give us your feedback on any Literacy Time PLUS resources, share ideas or discuss a topic of your choice in our online Forum. Go on, we’d love to hear from you.
