About the March 2008 issue

Welcome to Literacy Time PLUS Ages 5 to 7, finalist in this year’s Educational Resource Awards

We have been thinking BIG for the March issue of Literacy Time PLUS Ages 5 to 7, with a collection of fantastic literacy resources on the theme of Giants.

We have a wonderful animated audio story and poem, The Thunder Giant by Brenda Williams ready for you to download. Based on the traditional Norse legend of Thor, children can listen and read the story, find ‘hot spots’ in the pictures which trigger some delightful animation, and listen to the sound effects. There is also a poem to share on the same theme.

Then we have two downloadable games linked to the favourite fairytale of Jack and the Beanstalk – one providing practice in story sequencing and using traditional story language, and the other challenging children to add the suffixes -s and -es to nouns and verbs.

Kay Clifford has written a lovely fantasy story for group reading which is guaranteed to make the children giggle, called The Giant’s Smelly Feet, and we also have a fact-filled information leaflet about Giants of all kinds – from giant animals and natural landscape features to real-life human giants.

And don’t miss our fantastic interactive word play poetry resource here online. Poetry Playtime contains riddles, an acrostic, mixed up similes and spoonerisms – with drag and drop, click to reveal and typing in facilities. Lots of fun!

Last but definitely not least, available to download or to read in the magazine, is an article by author and illustrator Shoo Rayner which is guaranteed to stimulate discussion on the issue of reluctant boy readers. Tell us what you think in our online Forum. Go on, we’d love to hear from you.
