The National Year of Reading – a year-long celebration of all aspects of reading – was launched yesterday by Gordon Brown and a selection of guests to 10 Downing Street, including Ed Balls, children, writers and reading champions. The National Year of reading aims to build a greater national passion for the pastime among children, families and adults alike. It is hoped that through its numerous campaigns and activities throughout the year, the National Year of Reading will encourage and promote reading across schools, businesses and communities.

Commenting on the launch, Secretary of the Department for Schools, Children and Families, Ed Balls, expressed the importance of the celebration and its impact on children’s reading within schools. Mr Balls also added, however, that ‘the National Year of Reading is about much more than children’s achievement at school. It is about the potential of reading to open doors.’

Don’t forget, our About books online section has loads of information on the latest children’s books, as well as author interviews and competitions to help get children excited about reading. Plus – look out for fantastic World Book Day activities and a short story competition in the February issues of Child Education PLUS and Junior Education PLUS!
