Schools are invited to bid for £5000 grants to support their work on sustainability

Schools across the country are being invited to submit a sustainable plan in the hope of receiving a £5000 grant to support the development of their work on sustainability. Grants from the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) will be given to more than 30 schools who present the best plans.

This scheme builds on research commissioned by NCSL and carried out by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Institute of Education in London, which found that the most successful sustainable leaders actively integrate sustainability into their schools’ curriculum.

Tony Greany, NCSL’s Operational Director of Research and Policy said: ‘Schools must be at the heart of developing a sustainable world, not just in how they equip young people with the skills to make a difference, but also in how they operate and interact with their communities. While sustainability is about more than just carbon emissions, it seems likely that the Government will expect schools to achieve at least 60% reductions in the years ahead, so the issue is becoming incerasingly important.

‘It is extremely encouraging that 98% of school leaders say that sustainability is important or very important to them, not only within their school, but also in their personal life. This commitment is great news and really shows that the scale of the problem is recognised. Nevertheless, none of us know the answer of how best to lead a truly sustainable school, so ultimately our aim at NCSL is to support school leaders to explore and share effective practice in this critical area. We really hope that these research grants can help this to happen.’
